Applicants for the position must be residents of Clackamas County and must be available to attend a series of public meetings in May to review and approve a budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The county operates on a July 1 to June 30 fiscal year. The committee also meets quarterly to review and discuss budget-related matters. The 2013-14 budget totaled more than $600 million.

The commissioners approve the selection of 52 advisory boards and committees to advise them in a variety of capacities and to oversee a number of tasks and interests in Clackamas County.
